In the current study published in the journal Science, scientists have designed a new form of this protein, which can be made up to 10 times higher than earlier artificial S proteins in the cell.
The study and University of Texas senior author, Jason McClellan, said, “Depending on what type of vaccine it is, this new form of protein can reduce the size of each dose or accelerate vaccine production.
He added, “It can also be seen that the vaccine will now have access to more patients.” The new protein is named Hexapro (coronavirus protein) and is more stable than the team’s initial S protein model. According to scientists, it will be much easier to store and transport.
He said that the new S protein will also be able to tolerate much higher temperatures during storage at normal temperatures.
According to the study, Hexapro can also be used in the COVID-19 antibody test, where it will help detect the presence of antibodies in the patient’s blood. This would indicate whether the person had been infected with the virus earlier.
